This programme is aimed at learners new to the industry and existing employees  wanting to upskill and gain formal qualifications. The port and stevedoring sector will  benefit from this programme by having access to a skilled workforce capable to operate  safely and efficiently in key areas like Port Administration, Cargo Handling, and Heavy Machine Operation, allowing them to competently carry out tasks with limited  supervision.

Entry Requirements

Prospective learners must

- be in employment or have access in the port industry, working within the relevant scope 
of the programme. 

- be 16 years or older. 

- be a NZ Citizen or Permanent Resident

- be physically fit to undertake learning and assessment required by each unit component

- Have support from an employer to complete the programme in the workplace.

Outcomes

Graduates of this programme will be able to understand and comply with legislative requirements and organisational policies, contributing to safe and efficient port operations. They will have a working knowledge of port operations and the machinery used within the port environment. Additionally, they will be able to work safely and communicate effectively within a team to perform common tasks.

 

Graduates of the Port Administration strand will be able to provide customer service, engage with suppliers, and undertake quality control to complete administrative tasks. They will also be skilled in communicating with stakeholders to facilitate the receipt and delivery of cargo.

 

Graduates of the Cargo Handling strand will be proficient in safely lifting, moving, and stowing of cargo.

 

Graduates of the Heavy Machine Operation strand will be capable of operating port cargo lifting and shifting machinery with a working load capacity of over 10 tonnes, following safety and efficiency principles

Pathways

Graduates will have the skills and knowledge to work in areas such as:

 

Port Administration Strand
- Port administration of policies and procedures, receival and delivery of cargo (R&D), data entry, inventory management.

 

Cargo Handling Strand
- Lashing, cargo handling, stevedoring, provision of port auxiliary services (such as log scaling, tallying, mooring, refrigeration).

 

Heavy Machine Operation Strand
- Operation of: Straddle carrier, excavator to handle logs, lift truck, mobile harbour crane, conveyor belt loader for dry cargo, and/or other heavy machinery.

Depending on strand speciality, candidates may also have the skills and knowledge for employment in administration, machine operation, or in supply chain operations outside of port operations.

This programme may lead to the New Zealand Diploma in Port Operations (Level 5) with strands in Vessel Planning and Yard Planning or to generic first line management qualifications such as the New Zealand Certificate in Business (First Line Management) (Level 4)
